SixApart article in BusinessWeek...
If you're curious about the parent company behind Movable Type, TypePad, LiveJournal and the wonderfully sweet site I'm using to compose this message known as Vox, this BusinessWeek article published yesterday about SixApart is a must read. The article talks in detail about the history of the company started by Mena and Ben Trott.
As it turns out, the name for the company doesn't have anything to do with social networking and the six degrees of separation but the six days of separation between the couple's birthdays.
The article also talks about Joi Ito of Neoteny's early interest and eventual investment in the company and later, the $10 million cash infusion supplied by August Capital that ultimately paid for the acquisition of LiveJournal from Danga Interactive that added its five and a half million subscribers to the SixApart ranks.
There's even a section about a free speech debate over the "pro-ed" and "pro-ana" blogs [pro-eating disorder and pro-aneroxia LiveJournal blogs] that the company refused to censor citing free speech rights for its users that were blogging about choosing these disorders as a lifestyle. Definitely an interesting read.
